ART TEACHERS IN ALABAMA

PUBLIC SCHOOL DISTRICTS IN ALABAMA

These numbers are what Sharon Christman, Lindsay Mouyal, Susan Peters, Casey Williamson, and I (Anna Nichols) have found by systematically searching through school websites, looking at faculty lists as well as any fine art listings in the search for art teachers. We found many art teachers who have been serving Alabama schools for years, so the list from 2013-2014 is being updated to reflect this new data. 

Searching through school websites is tricky because some schools do not update their websites until later in the year, and some schools do not list teachers by subject at all. I called these schools to verify whether or not they had a visual art program. Also, I did further research to find out if these "new" art teachers were new-hires or if they were veteran teachers; I looked at minutes from board of education meetings as well as other online sources to figure out how long these teachers had been at their schools. Finally, I waited until the end of the year to verify the locations of these art teachers, doing the majority of research the last week of May, 2015.

The good news is that we have slightly more art teachers in our state than we had last year, according to this study. The district with the most gains was Alexander City, where 3 new art teachers were added. They formerly had only one. Also, Baldwin County added 2 new art teachers and Coffee County, Monroe County, Sylacauga City, & Oxford City each added one. However, nearly every school district stayed the same. Also, 12 school districts lost art teachers.  

We still have a long way to go:

21 counties are without an art teacher at all.

46 school districts (34%) have zero art teachers.

There are 8 counties in Alabama with only one art teacher in the entire county. 

There are 19 school districts with only one art teacher in the entire district.

843 schools (55%) do not employ an art teacher, according to our research. 

65 art teachers serve multiple schools. (This means that 142 schools in Alabama share 65 art teachers.)

78.6% of art teachers are the only one at their school.
